ARNE JACOBSEN  Danish, 1902-1971

Jacobsen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, in his hometown in Copenhagen, where he later became a professor of architecture.

He won a House of the Future competition in 1929 in which he would push the traditional envelope of Danish design and became a leading exponent of Modernism.

In 1930 he opened his own architectural office in Hellerup, where he created some of the most influential, innovative and perennially ubiquitous pieces of mid-century design. Jacobsen's furniture indeed remains exciting and relevant.

He designed many private houses in the Bellavista resort near Copenhagen. His main public buildings were the SAS skyscraper in Copenhagen, Denmark (1955) and St Catherine's College, Oxford, UK (1964).

He also designed cutlery and textiles, and classic furniture, especially the Egg and Swan chairs for his Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.
