Alan Davie: Inspirational. Timeless

6 - 22 October 2021

Last week we celebrated what would have been the 101st birthday of Alan Davie, the major figure in the art of our time (born 28 September 1920, Grangemouth, Scotland - died 12 April 2014, Hertfordshire, England).

Absorbed by a wide range of interests and possessed incredible talent, Davie lived his long life occupied by music and painting. In the army, and unable to paint, he turned to words and love of poetry. He was captivated by the teachings of Zen philosophy, oriental mysticism and primitive art. He spent endless hours gliding and underwater swimming.

This exciting new exhibition at Alan Wheatley Art features a selection of early paintings from the 1950s and 1960s juxtaposed with works Davie had created later in his life, in 2008.

There is something for everyone – paintings for the art connoisseurs with Alan Davie works already in their collections, as well as for the new collectors looking for ‘the’ first Alan Davie painting, and, in addition, the art lovers who would like to enjoy and be inspired by the works of one of the most celebrated artists of Modern British Art.

Inspirational. Timeless.
